Located on the north side of Chicago, Ravenswood sits just to the east of the Chicago River. It is most well known for being a neighborly area home to a wide variety of art centers, galleries, microbreweries and artisan shops. Ravenswood offers the perfect balance of culture and quiet.
Historically, this area was an affluent neighborhood, but over the years it had declined. Mostly forgotten just a few years ago, Ravenswood has cleaned up its image and is now home to artists and artisans in just about every medium imaginable. The Ravenswood real estate market is very diverse and quite affordable by Chicago standards. Prices are holding steady, making the perfect time to buy into this close knit, artistic community.
Common Types of Ravenswood Real Estate
The area is mostly residential and offers a wider variety of housing options, particularly compared to the urban areas of Chicago. Choose from detached single family homes, condos with one or two bedrooms, or even one of the impossibly large mansions left over from Ravenswood’s younger days. Many of the properties in this area have been remodeled, offering a lot of bang for the buck. One of the most well-known Ravenswood real estate features are the court yard buildings, which have made a huge come back in the last few years.
Ravenswood Real Estate Pricing
Ravenswood enjoys a relatively steady and affordable real estate market. Prices have dropped in the past few years, but they haven’t bottomed out and seem to be back on the rise. As more young people and creative types flood to the areas, prices should continue to hold steady. So, what can you expect when buying Raven wood real estate? The average listing price in the start of 2013 was a little over $300,000 and the median sale price was just slightly below that. That average is down less than one percent from the previous year.
Renters will find the Ravenswood real estate market a dream compared to other areas of Chicago. A one bedroom or studio can run as low as $600 a month. However if you are looking for a sleep, updated apartment expect to pay up to $1000 each month. Compared with prices in the Loop, Ravenswood is an extremely affordable area in Chicago to call home. And with easy access to the El, you can’t go wrong in Ravenswood.
More about Ravenswood
Ravenswood is a group of neighborhoods that lies Northwest from Lakeview between the Chicago River and Ravenswood Avenue. It has its own rapid transit system and is often described as a beautiful area with tree-lined streets and parks. Ravenswood communities include Ravenswood Gardens, Budlong Woods, Bowmanville, Ravenswood manor and some parts of Lincoln Square.
Ravenswood is perhaps one of the city’s first planned neighborhoods. Its homes consist of Prairie school homes, Victorian and brick row houses and wide lots. It is currently a great place for affordable single family homes, condos and multi-family units. One of Ravenswood real estate areas, Ravenswood Gardens is composed of residential blocks of brick flats and single family homes many of which are now gentrified.
The vast difference in price might seem surprising since the homes are only a bedroom short. However it also depends on the neighborhood or area that the home is located.
The transportation and shopping hub is located near Lincoln Square so they wouldn’t be too far from where you live if you plan on buying a home there. For example, the CTAs Brown Line has stops at Damen, Montrose and Western so you won’t have trouble commuting either. If you prefer trendy and traditional restaurants than the streets of Lincoln Square have those too. The Old Town School of Folk music is a favorite for musical aspirants.
Ravenswood also has a public park, Welles Park that is located right in the middle of Sunnyside, Western, Lincoln and Montrose. If your family is into sports the park is a great place to take them since it has several playing fields for tennis, basketball and a playground.
